As the name implies, they’re built with an internal toe box that encases your toes in heavy-duty steel. Most steel-toe boots look like any ordinary work boot, but a hidden steel “cage” protects your toes from punctures, compression, crushing, and a whole lot more. Because they’re the most heavy-duty protective boots, they’re also the heaviest. "This extra weight becomes really noticeable after a long day on site and boots typically get quite uncomfortable," says Nicholas.

So, if weight is a concern, thankfully, modern boots have solved this problem by offering composite-based safety toes that might be more your speed for protection, according to Nicholas. With composite materials, steel is no longer the only protective material used in safety boots. "Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) toe boots offer the same level of foot protection as metal but are considerably lighter and much more comfortable to wear all day long," he says.
