Bold claim: Boost Radio is expanding its reach across Ohio, signaling a major push to bring Christian hip-hop to more listeners. But here's where it gets controversial: is this expansion truly meeting the needs of a diverse gospel audience, or does it risk narrowing the spiritual music landscape to a single style?
River Radio Ministries has rolled out Gateway Creative Broadcasting’s Christian Hip Hop brand, Boost Radio, on three Ohio signals with a fourth slated to join soon.
Currently, Boost is broadcast on 88.7 W204CU in Findlay, 88.9 WHEI in Tiffin, and 90.1 WJEE in Bolivar/Canton, along with 104.9 WCVO-HD2 in Gahana/Columbus and 104.5 WQKT-HD2 in Wooster. An additional station, 91.1 W216AH in Ashland, is scheduled to start airing Boost programming on January 1. These stations, owned by Soaring Eagle Productions, previously carried River Radio Ministries’ programming as a replacement for the former Rise-FM brand, which began onboarding to River Network last November.
River Radio Ministries Program Director Josh Hooper explains the strategic motivation: these frequencies were chosen to reach the next generation of Christian music fans, highlighting vibrant college communities within each market. He emphasizes a three-year goal to introduce fresh formats across Ohio and broaden the reach of the message about who Jesus really is. The partnership with BOOST Radio is viewed as a key vehicle to accomplish this vision through the Hip Hop Built Different initiative.
Gateway Creative Broadcasting Operations Manager Mike Couchman adds that BOOST Radio welcomes the collaboration with River Radio Ministries. He notes that River’s singular focus on sharing the love of Jesus with excellence aligns closely with BOOST Radio’s mission, expressing optimism about what the partnership could unleash in Ohio.
