Over the next few months, my mission here at RE is to share and inspire and help families and people get back into the kitchen–cooking healthy meals, using leftovers (like with this Cheesy Salmon Dip recipe), learning to enjoy the kitchen, and actually put good thought into meal planning and grocery shopping. It’s going to be about reclaiming your kitchen, share with your neighbors, invest in your family, and even invite dinner party guests over for a quick meal. Join me as I’ll be working with SocialMoms and Wolf’s #ReclaimtheKitcheninitiative, and sharing a delicious Cheesy Salmon Dip recipe today!

Cooking at home has sharply declined over time. Over the years, as our schedules have become busier, we’ve begun to spend less time in the kitchen as a family. That makes me very sad, because I think back to all the years of cooking together and around our family table–the rich conversation, laughter, tears. The table is where so much of who we are today happened.

If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it the same. I wouldn’t want to miss any of it.

More important than the food.

It’s interesting how food can take a backseat when there’s exciting news to share or when kids are hurting, and you get deep into a discussion, and you forget about the dessert that’s in front of you. In our home, I always wanted our kids and others to be more important than the food or drink being served. I realize that not everyone feels this way, because we live in a “what’s cool and hip” society, and we focus more on where to eat out, getting to our next event (eating on the run), or even eating in front of the television.

But again, life happens (good food or not) around the family table!

Last child to leave the nest.

As our last child is getting ready to graduate, we have to be intentional with eating together, even though it’s only the three of us. We have to finish strong, keep the family table together, and set the standard high for our kids, so they will continue this on with their families.

5 tips to listen and engage around the table:

1. Be there. We can’t always fix another’s hurts, but we can be there for them, listening and showing love.

2. Listen to them. We don’t always need to advise, but we can listen. Sometimes our family just wants a listening ear, wanting to talk things out.

3. Give advice. It’s easy to jump in and give advice, but sometimes it’s best to sit back and wait to be asked to share some wisdom. So give it out at the right time.

4. Be empathetic. Sometimes our own pains and failures will help others, so be willing to think about your own experiences and how they might help.

5. More than words. Sometimes it’s a hug or a smile, or even sharing a tear with a guest, that means the world to our family and friends.

Back to the kitchen (my kitchen, above).

Surprising stats.

In 1900, we had 98% of our meals in the home. Today, it’s less than 50%. Wow. These numbers were surprising to me, and we spend less money at the grocery store now than in any other time in history.

We also only spend a mere 31 minutes a day preparing our meals! Which to me means we’re reaching for faster, quicker meals that are not healthy at all, such as frozen foods, fast foods, or boxed dinners.

For me and my family (and readers), I know “healthy” is a big deal.

Once you prioritize the family table and reap the benefits with family or guests, you will be blessed! Start small and consider one meal a week. That’s a great place to start.

Reclaim YOUR kitchen.

Wolf has outlined three simple ways you can reclaim your kitchen that I want to share with you:

o Plan your meals. Find a meal planning app or a website that fits your needs, and incorporate it into your day-to-day planning.

o Celebrate the goodness of food. Buying and preparing fresh food can make even the simplest meal absolutely delicious.

o Cook together. Set aside “screens-off” time, and enjoy one another while helping out in the kitchen.
