What are the disadvantages of civil service? ›

The New Jersey Civil Service Commission (NJCSC) has posted the formal Announcement and opened the online application portal for the 2023 NJ LEE. This is a significant change in the previous 3-year testing cycle, as the NJCSC has implemented annual NJ LEE testing.

NOTE: Paterson PD and Bordentown Township PD had a later application closing date of 4/22/24. The NJCSC has implemented annual NJ LEE testing. The NJCSC is facilitating the administration of the NJ LEE exam during the last two weeks of July through to the first week of August in 2024.

After you pass your exam, your name goes on an eligible list ranked by score. When an appointing authority (hiring agency) notifies the Civil Service Commission (CSC) that it wants to fill vacancies, CSC sends them the names that are ranked highest on the eligible list for the title they want to use.

Typically, certifications are issued for three (3) months. However, for public safety titles, such as fire fighter and police officer, certifications are issued for six (6) months.

On the other hand, the perishability of services also has advantages and disadvantages.

Disadvantages of civilian rule often involve the potential for corruption, legislative stagnation, failure to prioritise issues of less represented groups, implementation of economically unwise programs, and potential violation of civil liberties.
