India's stunning defeat in the Kolkata Test has sparked debate, but Gautam Gambhir is standing firm on his support for Rishabh Pant. After a disappointing loss to South Africa at Eden Gardens, where India stumbled while chasing a modest target, the spotlight is firmly on the team's performance. The final score? India managed a mere 93 runs, falling short of the 124 needed to win.
Stand-in captain Rishabh Pant, returning after a foot injury, scored 27 and 2 runs in the match. Despite the loss, head coach Gautam Gambhir has publicly backed Pant.
Gambhir's defense of Pant is clear: "From Rishabh's point of view, he's a world-class batter in this format. He plays in a certain way. He can take the game away as well. And we'll keep backing him to play this way as well because sometimes you've got to tell people to play the natural game and, more importantly, be a little smart as well. So, I think he's playing after a long time and I'm sure he will deliver in future."
But here's where it gets controversial... Gambhir's unwavering support for Pant, despite the team's failure, raises questions. Should players be given such strong backing after a poor performance?
The loss at Eden Gardens was India's first home defeat since December 2012. South Africa, with this victory, now leads the two-match series 1-0. The match saw key performances from South African players, including spinner Simon Harmer, who took 8 wickets, and captain Temba Bavuma, who scored a crucial half-century. In India's second innings, Harmer took 4 wickets for 21 runs, while Keshav Maharaj claimed 2 wickets for 15 runs. Marco Jansen also played a vital role, dismissing both Indian openers and finishing with figures of 2 for 15.
The second Test is scheduled for November 22 at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
